In a program known as Catholics Returning Home, the inhabitants of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wooster opened the doors of the church to people who for some reason separated from their home. church and wish to re-explore their connection to the Catholic faith.

Launched locally in 2014, the church followed a model program proposed by Sally Mews, author of “Inviting Catholics Home”. Mews came to Wooster to help establish a compassionate and caring team of church members to lead the effort. Now, this team is extending an invitation to non-practicing Catholics to join them, regardless of how long or why they have been away from church.

“Our team provides a non-judgmental, confidential and safe place where individuals can explore the challenges they have faced and their concerns associated with their journey of faith,” said Mary Zuercher, team coordinator.

“I was a Catholic cradle who, along the way, strayed from my faith. About eight years ago, I felt that something was missing in my life, ”said Eva Carter, former participant in the Catholics Returning Home program. “They were very helpful and welcoming, and although the course is a six week program, the management team are willing to spend as much time as needed to answer any of your questions.”

Gary Galka, a previous participant, added that it was his interaction with the other attendees and the faithful as well as the one-on-one discussions he had with the two priests that ultimately led him to join and to be part of a true church family.

The six-week series is designed to inform and answer questions non-practicing Catholics may have about the faith since leaving. The sessions are as follows:

  • Welcome and preview of the series
  • Sharing the Faith of Catholics Returning Home
  • The Eucharist: the heart of the matter
  • A walk through the mass accompanied by explanations and clarifications
  • The sacrament of reconciliation, an explanation of today’s confession
  • What Catholics Believe: The Creed

Sessions begin from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday, October 18, at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church, 527 Beall Avenue, in the Parish Hall.
