Catholic priests in northern Italy performed a nine-hour exorcism on a 26-year-old woman after she became violent in confession and hurled insults in several languages, including Latin.
The unnamed woman arrived at St. Mary’s Church on Mount Berico in Vicenza, Italy on Sunday, December 5.
“The young woman had already been seen by an exorcist in Verona, but on Sunday her parents brought her here, probably to try again to cure an ailment she had suffered for some time,” said Father Carlo Maria Rossato in La Republica.
The woman’s father was convinced his daughter was suffering from a “psychiatric problem,” the Journal of Vicenza reported. However, her mother believed her erratic behavior was the result of “demonic influence” and wanted her to see a priest, he said.
At the church, considered the site of two miraculous apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the 15th century, she confessed. Suddenly his body began to convulse. She became very agitated and screamed in Latin, according to reports.
The brothers of the Order of the Servants of Mary appealed to Father Giuseppe Bernardi, 80, the official exorcist of the church.

His presence is not enough and three other brothers join in the exorcism. Exorcists from other Italian dioceses have also been contacted to participate in prayers, reported Aleteia, an online Catholic news site. One gave advice remotely via video, according to The Times.
Father Rossato told La Republica that she was screaming and swearing – he said “the presence of the evil one was visible”.

The faithful and those who worked in the church were escorted and the doors of the church were barred. Many stopped to pray outside the church during the exorcism, Aleteia reported. Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene but were not allowed to enter.
