The Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit has indefinitely canceled the public mass while members of the religious order remain in quarantine.

HOUSTON – A church in southwest Houston has canceled public masses until further notice after five members of its religious order tested positive for COVID-19 and a priest, who died last week, had it maybe also had.

The five members of the religious order live and work in the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit. The church said a priest, Donnell L. Kirchner, died on May 13 and may also have been infected with the virus. Father Kirchner was 79 years old.

The church said those who tested positive are in quarantine and are asymptomatic. Two priests who tested positive have been active in the celebration of public masses in the Holy Spirit since it reopened on May 2.

The Holy Spirit is asking everyone who has attended mass at the church since it reopened to monitor their health and get tested for the coronavirus.

“It’s a really sad situation, we want to make sure that all parishioners and priests are healthy,” said parishioner Steven Foxford.
