Manila’s Catholic priests lead ‘penitential march’ to pray for voters in May election

Clergy in the Archdiocese of Manila led a “penitential march” on Thursday, February 17 to pray for voters as they choose the country’s next leaders in the upcoming elections in May.

They are joined by other priests from the suffragan dioceses of Manila and men and women religious from different congregations.

“We ask our fellow Filipinos to be ‘maka-Diyos kaya makabayan’, to be discerning in their choice and to prefer leaders who embody and promote the values ​​of the Kingdom of God,” the archdiocese said.

The activity began at the 9 a.m. Mass at the Manila Cathedral with Cardinal Jose Advincula as principal president and homilist.

The event also aims to mark the 150th anniversary of the martyrdom of the three priests Mariano Gomez, José Burgos and Jacinto Zamora, known collectively as GomBurZa.

After Mass, the penitential walk will follow from the Cathedral to the GomBurZa Memorial Monument in Luneta Park, then head to the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Guia in Ermita.

The archdiocese said he was doing “alay-lakad” according to the pious Filipino sense of penance.

“For us Filipinos, doing acts of penance or sacrifice is never just for oneself, but always intercession, that is, on behalf of others and in solidarity with others,” he said. he declared.

“As clergy, we will do this act of sacrifice not only for our personal piety but also for the good of our people and in fellowship with our people.”
