09/24/2021 Burma (International Christian Concern) – With the latest offense by the Burmese Army (Tatmadaw), the Christian-majority Chin state is seeing an increase in attacks on Christian homes, villages and properties.

On September 22, a clergy house, a convent and a boarding school were damaged by the intensification of military attacks. Buildings within the grounds of the Sacred Heart Church in the town of Mindat were attacked by artillery fire overnight, a local source said.

Fortunately, according to UCA News, no casualties were reported as everyone hid inside the church grounds. The roof of the boarding school and a wall and windows of the clergy house were damaged while the convent was partially damaged.

It was not the first time that churches had been bombed and attacked. Johnson Memorial Baptist Church in Thantlang Township was hit by artillery fire on September 14. St. John’s Catholic Church in Falam Township has also been occupied and desecrated by the Tatmadaw.

Priests and pastors as well as civilians have been arrested or even killed. Chin Pastor Cung Biak Hmun was shot dead on September 18, while Reverend Thian Lian Sang was taken from his home on September 16. We do not know where he is.

The Tatmadaw staged a coup in February to overthrow the civilian government of Aung Sang Suu Kyi. The resistance of the Burmese people is met with brutal repression. So far, more than 1,000 civilians have been killed, 6,698 detainees and 1,984 others are on arrest warrants, according to the Association for Assistance to Political Prisoners based in Thailand.
