The Vatican has punished two Polish bishops for negligence in the fight against sexual abuse of minors in their dioceses, two statements from the papal nuncio said on Monday.

Following investigations, Slawoj Leszek Glodz, Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Gdansk, and Edward Janiak, former Bishop of Kalisz, were ordered to live outside their dioceses.

They were prohibited from participating in public religious celebrations or secular gatherings.

The two will also have to donate an adequate amount to the St. Joseph Foundation which supports victims of sexual abuse, according to the statements.

The issue of sexual abuse within the Polish Catholic Church, including against minors, has come back to the fore in recent years, following a series of television documentaries and media reports on the abuse and attempts at cover-up.

The two punished bishops were included in these reports.

Glodz has also been criticized for the alleged intimidation of his subordinates during his tenure as Archbishop and for an obviously lavish lifestyle.

According to information provided by the Polish Church, complaints of sexual abuse were filed against 382 priests in Poland between 1990 and 2018, involving around 625 victims.

In the summer of 2019, Poland appointed a special state committee to investigate the ill-treatment of minors 15 and under.
